hairline cracks in new grout

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.16 PM

I had a box built around my bath and tiled in just over a week ago. Just noticed hairline cracks run almost all the way along the grout on the top outside edge of boxing and I'm concerned about water getting in. I guess I'm surprised to see this after only a week -10 days. I'm trying to call my builder back to take a look although I'd be grateful for advice on what to expect and what to ask for. Is this unavaoidable due to being a) on an edge and b) on a wood backing? In which case what can I do or get done to keep the water out? Is this a mistake and something they should fix or should I expect to pay again? any advice much appreciated.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes it is a mistake, you should have employed a tiler to do your tiling, not a builder. The cracks could be because of movement on your substrate (tiling onto wood, a no no) Wrong adhesive, tubed adhesive use and grouted to soon. Slow set adhesive and grouted to soon. Your "builder" only gets one attempt at putting his work right now under new rules. Good luck

The cracking would be caused by the shrinkage coused by the wood backing and possible movement in the timber the only real solution would be to remove the grout in the offending area and redo it.

Difficult to answer, but I'll give it a go.maybe the wood has taken on the moisture from the grout.which has transferred the moisture to the wood...hence cracking.maybe build the box out of a different material and use a more flexible grout.hope this helps.
