Plumbing

Cost to replace toilet siphon and inlet valve

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.16 PM

Hi We have had a plumber in to change a faulty siphon in a standard pull handle cistern. We were not at the house at the time but he is charging us £160 labour and £28 parts. He also suggested he come back again to replace the inlet valve of which he is estimating £57 for materials and £150 labour. We have a strong suspicion we are being ripped off. Please can anyone tell me how long a competent plumber should take to replace a siphon and an inlet valve on a 'bog' standard cistern? For his charges we could have got a new toilet fitted?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

That's disgusting and gives the trade a bad name. I could properly change an entire cistern, flush valve inlet etc in an hour if it was a straight forward job. Parts even at the top end of the market your looking let's say £20 odd. I charge £50-£70 for a job like this depending on the customers location. It makes me pretty angry hearing of tradesman ripping of people

No this is wrong, the parts came together, labour should be about 1hour £65, but could take a bit more it does depend, and all the parts for the cistern should be about £20. I hope this helps.

Depends what area you are in but if this was us you would likely pay a fallout charge which includes an hours labour plus the materials so say £85 to do the job.

I am disgusted at this price. It is plumbers like this that give the rest of us a bad name. We charge between £55 and £75 depending on the customers location. I personally would tell him no thanks

Tell him to go n whistle for that money you paid him why he couldn't have just called you and then change both the parts at same time as he would have had to take apart the same pieces anyway and you could have sorted the additional part cost out if you live in Dorset give me a call the next time cheers Dave
