Damp Proofing

salt on external in upstairs bedroom

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.58 PM

We have salt growth and yellow staining on external wall, in an upstairs bedroom. From doing our research, we knew we had a leak. We had a problem with our gutter and have since had a new one fitted. My question is how do we know if the wall is still damp. The wall feels dry but cold. I have hoovered off the salt and it grows back. We have a damp meter reader and we are getting readings of 24, however I read up these devices read salt and not moisture in plaster. We know the plaster needs to come off, because it's hollow when we tap on it. Does salt indicate the wall is drying out or does it mean penetrating damp is still getting in. Please can anyone advise us.

Hi There If you have fixed the gutter and stopped the moisture from soaking the bricks then you have sorted the cause next you have to consider that their has been a lot of water soaking into the bricks which will take a while to dry out, hack off the salt contaminated plasters as the salt will still absorb water from the internal moisture sources to give damp readings, then put a dehumidifier in the room to absorb more of the moisture from the bricks, then after a week re plaster with sand and cement with a water proofer and salt inhibitor additive sika is a good make. regards Joseph

Yes is takes time for the damp to go away. To cover the stain you need it to be coated with an solvent based primer then to coats of emulation of the colour you like to have on your wall
