Source of smell in kitchen - been there for last few years. No other room affected.

We have a heavy sour smell in the kitchen when not ventilated. Can't trace source of smell. Bought new fridge freezer incase it was drip tray. Checked pipes under sink, washed carpets in play area, changed suite and curtains in play area, checked dishwasher, removed kick boards, cleaned extractor fan (which has never worked). The smell has been there for last few years. No amount of cleaning removes the smell.Large kitchen with play area attached. No smell coming from sink that we can detect. Done everything we can to trace smell.

Hi There,
how is the discharge pipe from the washing machine, and for that matter the dishwasher, configured where it meets the household plumbing waste system?
What type of flooring have you got, Is there any pipework running under the floor ?
Could the smell be coming in from outside eg, a hole or air vent in the wall, near a drain for instance ? ( you mention a vent that didn't work )
