Is it best to remove artex or skim over it?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.15 PM

Hi, Our ceiling has what looks like artex (a stipple dotted effect) and I have had various quotes from plasterers. I have also heard concerns around asbestos and the plaster falling down. So is it best to remove artex or skim over it? If removing it does this make it less likely for the plaster to fall down as it's not 'holding on' to the artex pattern too? Thanks!

Hi phill here from P.Sangster Building & Joinery There are a couple of solutions to your problem. The cheap fix = skim over it can be done probably won't fall down. The middle range fix = overboard the art ex with plasterboard then skim. Won't fall down but make sure the contractor does the job properly and fixes the plasterboard to the joists not just the old plasterboard. The best solution = the best option but the most costly. Pull down old ceiling and replace with new but this will incur a charge for a plasterboard only skip.(not cheap ). And a asbestos content test to seek if any special measures are needed to dispose of the waste material. There is a small risk of asbestos but any risk is a risk ! Do not scrape or let anyone scrape artex off of your ceiling before it has been tested for asbestos content this will create the dust that you do not want to inhale. It only takes one particle in your lungs to develop asbestosis. Hope this was helpful

I usually underboard the artex ceilings then skim the plasterboards , this is more cost affective and gives a ice neat job.
