Loft Conversion

Insulating floor between loft room and bedrooms

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.58 PM

Hi All, Since losing my builder part way through my extension/loft conversion I have decided to do some of the easier work myself. I'm currently working in the loft attempting to insulate/soundproof/fireproof between the ceilings of the bedrooms below and the newly created loft room. So far I have done the following: After cleaning all the dust/debris I have laid 100mm of rockwool beween the ceiling joists of the bedroom ceilings, I have then looped chicken wire up and over the new joists . the new joists are 200mm and I have put 170mm rockwool between these which I have pushed down a little to fill all gaps as I understand the purpose of this layer is to hold back fire rather than provide insulation. My question is this: firstly, is the above ok? and secondly there is room for me to put another 100mm of insulation on top of the 170mm, I have lots of 100mm insulation left over so would like to use it if its going to be beneficial. Many Thanks in advance for your replies. Hi Ian, I'm in Birmingham and yes I have the required planning permission and specifications. I have insulated as per the specs but I think I didn't make myself clear in my question. As I have the spare insulation available and as there is room for the 100mm to go on top then I though this wouldn't do any harm and can only increase the fire resistance between floors. Please correct me if my assumptions are wrong. Thanks for replying.

Hi mabs, You don't say where in the UK you are. Here in Scotland these work require permission from the council and therefor drawings and specification would have been submitted. Do you not have these documents at hand ? Ian

there is not enough informantion here to tell normally just puttin insulation between is not enough to prevent "cold Bridging" the norn would be 100mm between joist then 50mm over the top of celotex or the like rockwall has not got the same u factor g also looping with chicken wire will just make more work for whoever you get to do the work i would leave it to a builder
