Loft Conversion

Loft ladders and ceiling joists

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.15 PM

Hi, At some point in the future (say in 5 years time) I will be looking at doing a loft conversion. In the meantime I want to install a loft ladder, add insulation and board out the floor for storage. I have been advised that the floor is just for the ceilings and I would need it strengthening if using it as a habitable room in the future. Am I best having the joists strengthened now rather than have to re-do the insulation and floor in the future? What would this involve? Do they replace the joists or add in different joists and raise the floor? When adding in the loft ladders can these be attached to the ceiling joists or again are they not strong enough to support them? I have the loft ladder already and a load of wood I was going to use as temporary boards. I have workmen coming to do the insulation at a cost of £200. I'd rather not have to do it twice or make things more complicated down the road. Thanks Rebecca.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Rebecca, If you are planning on doing a full loft conversion in 5 years and you have funds available to complete the required flooring now for storage it may be a good idea to complete load bearing flooring now. Or at least have someone come around and assess the floor. As you may need to install Rolled Steel Joists (RSJ's) depending on various factors. But if you was to go with the flooring. Additional floor joists would need to be installed independent from your existing ceiling joists. If you need us to come and have a look for you and give you an idea of what is needed please be in touch
