Polyfilla is showing through our skimmed walls. How do we get a non patchy finish?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

We filled in loads of gaps and cracks in our walls with deep gap polyfilla but then decided to have them skimmed. A week later they were painted with watered down paint about 50/50 and a week after that again painted with watered down paint. However its very patchy and we can see patches of the filla used before it was skimmed. Our builder said its dried at a different rate and our emulsion should cover it but hes away so can't have a proper look till hes back. How can we solve this so we dont have a patchy finish? Should we try stain blocker in the walls as we need to stain block a bit of ceiling anyway? Please help im desperate to finish our room. Thanks

Yes it's true the villa and plaster may have dried at different rates, Do not try stain block this is a pretty poor product, Try a product called SBR it's Like pva just better or you can just use pva. mix it to a ratio of 1 part SBR/pva 3 parts water (normally it would be 4:1 for newly plastered walls) and roller onto walls like paint this will seal the new plaster, preferably this should have been done before painting but will still be ok. Once dry I like to give it another coat then you should be ok to paint.

Best advice is to use a Dri-wall Sealer. If you Google G-Tec sealer the best product to use is the universal type. It states `for use on plasterboard prior to paint and wallpaper application. Improved whiteness and covering power. Does not provide a vapour control layer`. But applied over any stained surfaces it is a great product to omit bleaching through of stains prior to painting.

Why water down the emulsion! Personally i would have PVA'd the freshly skimmed walls then applied at least two coats of un - watered down emulsion. as you have already painted just give two more coats un-watered down and i'm sure it will look fine. avoid using own brand paints stick with Dulux and you cannot go wrong. hope this helps

Hi,now you have primed walls with watered down paint.try another coat undiluted and see it it improves, might need a few coats, maybe your paint was a bit too diluted.
