How far can a ceiling be dropped to make room in the loft for conversion?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.15 PM
I am looking at buying a 1 bed detached property that has potential for a loft conversion IF the ceilings are lowered substantially. there is plenty of room to do - the old ceilings are high so, is there a maximum amount of 'drop' that it is possible to achieve?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You will need around 2.1 or 2.2m of headroom for the majority of the room to make it worth while. You will have to get someone to take a look as without knowing what size floor joists, roof alterations your job requires it would be difficult to say exactly how much you have to drop the ceilings.
In your case I would go to RAISE the roof ! Usually only possible in detached homes.
All the best
