Cracks appearing in walls and wonky floorboards

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

Our house, a semi-detached dormer bungalow, has started having cracks appearing all around the house (inside). They're all very thin cracks, mostly either above windows and doors or along the top of the wall, where it meets the ceiling. Additionally the floorboards on the landing are all now wonky and creaking and the floor in the downstairs hall (at the bottom of the stairs) has a dip in it (think it's a concrete floor). It seems like the hall is sinking in the middle and the cracks seem to mostly follow towards that area. We've got a rainwater drain outside the front door that we think goes to a soakaway (it never goes dry) and we're wondering if that's leaking into the ground, and additionally both bathrooms are downstairs (one is off the hall) and the other thought is if there's a leak there. We're on a water meter and not seeing any indication from bills that that's going up, so don't think there's a problem there. What we don't know is if this is just down to the weather or if there's a leak but not sure how to check. Husband is reluctant at this point to involve the insurance company until we really have to. Any suggestions. This has been resolved now.

Usually where the ceiling meets the top of the wall cracks can appear , sometimes where there is a difference of materials , or if there isn't any scrim tape between the ceiling and wall prior to skimming . Quite a lot of small cracks will appear around windows and doors ,again sometimes due to different materials such as concrete or metal lintels , also where there is natural movement such as window and doors being opened and shut over the years. I don't think there is anything really serious here , ie . subsidence , as there would be serious cracks on the outside of the property .
