Bigger cold water storage tank.. better hot water pressure?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

I am about to change my leaking hot water cylinder and just wondered if a bigger cold water storage tank would improve my hot water pressure?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Two points to consider here, yes a bigger cold water storage tank will help, or double up on the size of your existing one by piping them up together with a duel draw-off outlet from each tank then connected together to form one cold feed, as their is a greater volume of water forcing the hot water out of the top of the cylinder to all hot water outlets. Also increase the height of cold water storage tank(s) by raising it as high as you can (where practical) as the increased head of water will also help hot water flow rate, especially to 1st floor hot water outlets! NB: Remember when fitting an additional CWS tank or replacing with new has to comply with current water regs (WRAS)! We are trying to increase flow rate here not pressure, two different things in this scenario

Hi Adam The pressure in a vented system, is not given by the amount of water into the tank, but from the difference in height between water level in the tank and drawing point. For example a tank just above the loft with the shower at almost ceiling level could have about 1 MT difference, therefore 0.1 bar of pressure at the shower head. The same tank supplying water to a shower two floors below, (3.5 MT difference) will supply water at 0.35 Bar. As you replacing the tank, try to install it at a higher position, allowing 30cm above tank for maintenance.. Or even better install an unvented cylinder I hope that's helps Tiziano

Hi No is the answer! You can improve it slightly by raising the tank but this requires building a substantial platform in the loft. A much better solution, since you are replacing the cylinder would be to install an unvented cylinder that operates at mains pressure, then you could get rid of the loft tank altogether! The best known brand is Megaflow but there are others too. Some other plumbing would be required to convert all the cold feed to mains pressure. Hope that helps Regards Chris

No only a cold water storage cistern[tank] being place higher then the existing position would increase pressure. Seeing you are changing your leaking cylinder it might be worth changing it to a thermal store which gives you main pressure water with out the regulations controlling unvented cylinders which also gives you main hot water . If you are in the south east and require the professional go to my builder for assistance Good luck Dave
