Painting new wood garage doors white?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.58 PM
I'm confused with the terms 'primer' and 'undercoat' that seem to be interchangeable. Is a primer necessarily a special or different paint from undercoat paint? Can the undercoat paint be used as a 'primer' - in the sense of "a first coat ?(i.e. a primary coat) [the wood has been 'knotted']

usually you'd do a coat of primer, coat of undercoat then 2-3 coats of your topcoat. You can however buy a paint which is a primer and undercoat all in one. I find this the best option

This all depends on what you are doing and what paint system you are using ie interior or exterior wood work...a water based system or oil based system, yes you can get a water based (acrylic) primer/undercoat but you must then use a water based top coat an oil based system uses a separate primer, undercoat ,top coat . never use 2-3 coats of top coat ....knott first with zinnser primmer sealer ,apply 1 coat of primmer 2 coats of undercoat 1 coat of top coat
