Finishing a straight edge around a fireplace

I have re-opened a fireplace which a previous owner bricked up. I would like to plaster the chimney breast up to the fireplace and also on the inside of the opening,however leaving a half brick depth on the edges of the opening so that there is a small red-brick edging to the fireplace. How do I get a neat straight edge to my plaster? I've been looking at beading but can't work out exactly what I should be looking for or maybe I'm barking up the completely wrong tree? Many thanks in advance

use a skim stop bead of 3mm to finish the edge

Try using a thin coat stop bead or arch bead. Ask to see one at your local builders suppliers. You will be able to tell by looking at one whether it will work or not. If not, try plastering up to a straight edge eg) screw a piece of wood to it and plaster up to this, then remove carefully. Hope this helps!
