Fencing

Fence collapsing due to neighbour excavating their garden

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.14 PM

Hi there, My neighbours, prior to me purchasing my property decided to excavate their back garden for reasons unknown to me. This was not evident when I purchased the property because the fencing was intact, however as there is a big trench running alongside their side of the fence, it has gradually been leaning into their garden and as such one of the posts have almost fallen completely due to the lack of support their side and two panels have become dislodged, again as the posts aren't holding them in place. The trench is approx. 2 feet deeper than the level of my garden and it's been suggested to me that maybe the only way of gaining adequate support without them re-filling their garden is to use steel posts as concrete ones wont go deep enough. Please could anybody suggest a good way of getting a strong fence back in place?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

1. ask neighbour nicely what are their intentions, maybe theyre going to build a nice brick wall, 2. push fence into there garden and blame them for the damage, 3. seriously, you can get 6ft 9inch posts drop these into deeper holes and perhaps end up with a 3 or 4ft fence line

Hi there, by the sounds of it it's not a good situation! One thing I can suggest is using longer concrete posts. If you have a 6 ft high fence then you could use 10ft high concrete posts,if u you have shorter than 6ft high even better! If you get the correct people in to do the job it will hold and support the fence. Be aware you will have to use a lot of post mix around the base and your 2ft side of the garden but it will hold for years.
