Have I damaged my boiler - fibreglass?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.14 PM

My combi boiler - quite new and working fine - is stored in a huge cupboard in the flat I've just moved into. The cupboard also houses a disused flue from previous warm air system that goes up into ceiling, with some fibreglass insulation around the hole the flue goes out of. I didn't realise it was fibreglass insulation (naive) until I started hacking away at it. The boiler wasn't directly below the falling chunks of fibreglass, but inevitably it got a decent powdering of dust which I've tried to clean off best I can. Luckily I had a mask on, but the boiler had no such protection, not even a dust sheet. So my question is, will this have damaged the boiler? No idea how they work internally and whether there's some way the fibreglass can get into the system. I've read a few horror stories online but these seem to relate to storage tanks, whereas mines a combi. Are they sealed from this kind of thing, will a powerflush help? Am I buggered? Thanks, any advice gratefully received! UPDATE: Thanks to all who replied. The Fibreglass is definitely yellow in colour - am I right is saying asbestos doesn't come in this colour? The flue is definitely metal so I'm pretty sure it doesn't contain any asbestos, but a bit worried with so many mentions of asbestos! Thanks Again.

Hi there, if your boiler is fairly new it will be room sealed. This means the combustion chamber etc is totally sealed from the room to which the Boiler is fitted. The boiler shall also have a outer case which houses the remaining components. It's unlikely the fibreglass would of found its way inside the boiler or system. Give the top of the boiler a going over with a vacuum cleaner and am sure it will be fine. If you have any further doubts get a gas safe engineer to give the boiler a service. Regards David Hurst.

If new it should be room sealed, so no damage to combustion chamber, however should be checked!

I don't think anything would have got into the boiler as most modern boilers are now sealed from the room. My only concern is are you sure it was fibreglass, in my experience old warm air unit cupboards used to be lined with asbestos and in some cases the flue was made of asbestos

dust it off the top surface and it should be ok, make sure it is fibreglass and not asbestos
