Toilet cistern started overflowing
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.58 PM
Hi myBuilders. Our toilet's cistern, after working perfectly well since installation has just started to overflow into the bowl which is wasting water and moreso keeping us up at night. I've had a look inside and from research I believe its a torbeck value, so have tried to adjust the screw which is supposed(?) to adjust the water level without success. Any advice on what it could be

If the adjustment screw doesn't solve the problem, there may be something wrong with the inners of the valve. May be worth just getting a new fill valve fitted

Hi, If the cistern is a push button type I would think it's likely to be the flush valve washer leaking. A good indicator is, when you look at the water in the toilet bowl you can see small ripples on the surface. This is quite a common fault on push button cisterns. The noise you hear during the night is the fill valve replacing the lost water after the level has dropped enough for the valve to operate. Seen it many times. Simple to repair by replacing the washer. Washers are available online, but get the right one for the valve you have ie Siamp, Opella etc. The top of the flush valve normally twists off to gain access to the washer. Take a little care as some of the plastic clips on these flush valves can be a little fragile. Hope this helps.
