Low hot water pressure to taps in flat

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

Hi, I have a problem with low hot water pressure in a flat to the taps (bath, basin and kitchen). All taps have just been replaced with modern mixers, without thinking about water pressure, and the hot supply comes from a combination cyclinder which is located about 1 metre from floor level. Cold is mains pressure and fine, and shower is electric running off the cold supply only. I have been given differing solutions from a couple of plumbers and hope someone can advise on the correct fix as I don't want to waste money on the wrong solution!! One has advised to fit a pump on the hot supply from the cylinder to boost the pressure to the taps. The other has advised to replace all the taps to low pressure ones (or replace the cylinder) as fitting a pump will not resolve the problem - apparently you will drain the cylinder too quickly and damage the pump when pumping air (although I'm not sure why you would continue using the hot once the cylinder has emptied as you would only get cold then anyway, even if it filled fast enough!) or the pump wont always trigger as the pressure will be too low to activate it??? I think I'd prefer the pump option as the taps I have are nicer than the low pressure ones you can get, but no point doing this if it wont work. Hope someone can help out. Thanks

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If you have room change the combination cylinder for a thermal store cylinder unit this give you mains water pressure on your hot supply and I presume all of your cold supply is fed from the mains supply thus this new cylinder gives you mains pressure on the hot supply . Unlike unvented cylinders the thermal store do not have to meet the G3 safety regulations. Personally I would recommend Gledhill thermal store cylinders. ,I hope this assist you which is a bit dearer then a pump but far far better the pump, Dave Ward

Hi Andrew, if you have a gravity fed hot water tank, that's where the header tank that feed the hot water tank, the cold gets fed into bottom of the water tank and hot water comes out of the top of the tank to feed the taps if you have the feed tank higher or increase the size of the feed tank, check that the stopcock or gate valve that isolates the feed to the tank is fully open first if its not it will restrict the flow as well regards G D property maintenance wirral

Best option is to go with the Unvented Cylinder, I have just finished a complete block of flats fitting these. Mains pressure hot water at all outlets.
