Type of screws to fit a bathroom cabinets
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.32 PM
I am trying to fit few bathroom cabinets in my bathroom. They are all about 15kg when empty. What types of plugs and screws do I need in order to ensure that it will not fall down when full? Thank you very much. PS. I assume there are different types of walls - how can I understand what is my type of wall?

The first thing is to determine the make-up of the wall. Generally, walls in bathrooms are either brick or block and plastered or a stud wall constructed of plasterboard and skimmed with plaster. A brickwall will sound 'dead' when tapped whereas a plasterboard wall will sound hollow. If fitting the cabinet to a brick wall, mark the wall with a pencil and drill the required holes with masonry drill. If the cabinet is particularly heavy use a brown Wall plug, 7mm dia, or for a lighter cabinet use a red wall plug 5.5mm. For a stud wall(where the plasterboard is is fixed to wooden batons) find the position of the batons(probe with a small screwdriver) and screw directly into them, as this will give you the best fixing. Alternatively, use a plasterboard fixing such as a Spring or gravity toggle. This will distribute the weight better behind the plasterboard.

Identify what walls the cabinets are being fitted to by knocking on each wall, if one sounds hollow than that is a 'Stud Wall' if they sound solid then that is a structural solid brick/block wall. For the later use normal red or brown rawl plugs. Masonry drill size: Red = 5.5mm or Brown = 7mm
If however it is a Stud wall then use plasterboard fixings as per the link below, bought from any good hardware shop/Screwfix/B&Q etc
