Is it structurally better to reinstate a chimney breast than use an RSJ for support?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.58 PM

We have just found out that a chimney breast was removed on the ground floor in the house we've just bought, and inadequate support (gallows brackets) put in place. Our options now to support the structures above (house is 3 storeys) seem to be to put in an RSJ or to rebuild the chimney breast. Is rebuilding the chimney breast potentially better structurally? I'm thinking it might be as the steel will have to rest on an internal, and an external wall, increasing the load on these walls?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

either way would suffice they are both just as strong . i would recommend a rsj due to the amount of space you gain.

putting a beam in your loft will be more cost efficient and a lot less mess , as longer as the internal wall can carry the weight there will be no problem
