Driveways & Paving

Urgent - 3 layers driveway dug for pipe

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

Hi I needed to fix the plumbing in the house, upgrading the pipe from main to house. Unfortunately, that pipe was going under the driveway. The company I hired decided to dug the driveway right in the middle to install the new pipe. They broke through 3 layers: 1 first sand/cement mix (about 2/3 foot), 1 layer or concrete (about more than 1 inch) and a layer of slabs, before digging the clay. In the end, what they did is put the part of the extracted material back into the hole (all mixed, pieces of concrete/clay/cement). I estimate roughly 65-70% went back in - the rest being in bags. Then they reused about 70% of the slabs leaving large patch of concrete here and there. I believe they did a 2 inches concrete layer on top of what they put back. Can someone comment this? Will this sink? will the rain go through? Any problem I should foresee in the short/mid-future (6M/18M/3Y)? Thank you very much in advance for your feedback & answers! Answer to questions below: - The quote wasn't detailed, and for personal reason, it was complicated to delay to acquire the information in time. - They compacted manually by impact (that is without any tool such a rammer) - Note that the pipe replacement was necessary.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

if they didnt compact the trench yes it will sink.. materials should of been seperated... personally a layer of clay on to the pipe then a layer of sand compacted.. then limestone mot type1 compacted.. then a mortar bed for the flags- paving.. all i can say is what did they actually quote you for on your estimate?..

It always pays to get two or three quotes to compare not only price but what they are pricing for, From what you are saying the trench will definitely sink if this happens go to trading standards, what ever they quoted you for they should have made sure it was compacted right, be it clay, sand or stone Peter
