Slate tiles too heavy for plasterboard wall?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

We are due to tile round our bath with some natural slate tiles (Sheera Modular Slate) , there approx 11mm thick and I roughly worked out the weight to be for just the tile 29kg per square meter, with adhesive is this going to be far too heavy for newly installed moisture board (plaster board)? Thankyou

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You would be just over the limit, plaster board (not skimmed) will take 32kg per m2,so with your tiles and 4kg for adhesive & grout making that 33 kg,to be honest it not much over so as long as the boards are well fixed I can not see a problem, but you could remove the board and replace with tile backer board taking you to 40 kg.

hi , when applying natural heavy material to walls on a plaster board surface it is taken into consideration the weight of tiles being fixed on top of each other . depending on the size of the area to be tiled work around the room a course at a time with a rapid adhesive then start a new course where you 1st started by then then your 1st row of tiles would have set ,if the erea is fully tiled a qualified tiler would fix a certain amount then come back to complete on the second day . its a bit like building a high brick wall its done in stages to allow to dry .

Hi the maximum weight limit for tiling direct on to plasterboard without skim is 32kg per sqr mtr ,using stone or in your case slate maximum thickness of 10 mm, this includes adhesive. I had this problem with a bathroom I tiled with stone tiles , the only solution was to cut out the plasterboard and install tile backerboard with bolts to the original brickwork ,or you can use batons to screw boards too. Tile backerboard increases the weight limit allowed considerbrerly. So my advice would to not take the risk do it right first time ,or change slate tiles to ceramic that look like slate with less weight. Regard Stephen.

no the weight should'nt be too heavy, i'd recommend plastering the plasterboard first though to give the tile adhesive a better key
