Tiling

old tiles removed but uneven adhesive remains on wall, remove or replaster

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

Help, I've bought a redrow home and they tiled the bathroom the wrong colour, they then tiled over the old tiles (only discovered this recently because the correct tiles were uneven and they have now stripped the walls again), of which they have only put new plasterboard on one wall and filled holes in the others, the tile adhesive is still on the wall is this going to cause problems when they re tile? Is best practice to put plaster board on all walls? Should they really put new plasterboard in? Sorry for it being wordy, cheers Liz

It would be a much better surface if removed and replaced with new board, but as long as the walls are sound there is no problem with going over the old adhesive just make sure that any loose adhesive is removed and prime the walls,I always use SBR diluted 50/50 with water,in no way use PVA this is not fit for purpose.

re board it with Moisture Resistant Plasterboard (mrp) and re skim the bathroom it could be a bit costly and messy taking out the old plasterboard thanks Carl

I would remove any old adhesive residue from the walls prior to tile fixing.
