Wooden Stairs ruined - how can the situation be solved?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

I have a house with old wooden stairs that admittedly, were full of woodworm and needed parts replacing. Trying to help out, my brother sanded them down and filled the holes in without matching up the colour of the filler. They look awful! Now he's talking about painting them, but I'm worried I'll lose the tone of the house (early 1900s Northern Spain). I'm thinking of putting a new 'top' on each stair, then painting the rise part. Any suggestions? Also, as the stairs are in frequent use, what sort of paint should I use so that I don't need to repaint them every year. Any advice offered would be most gratefully received. Thank you.

Hello, You can buy kits which essentialy do what you want. A bit of fitting involved . There called stair cladding. You could fit these and not worry about painting at all. They are pricey though . Hope this is helpful

I take it youve sorted out the woodworm problem first? No point filling the holes and replacing treads without killing of the worm with proper treatment first.
