Bricklaying & Repointing

how much mortar should be between bricks

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

Hi, am having an extension built and have noticed that they seem to be gutting corners or running out of materials. The mortar between the bricks is 3 inches wide in places and 4 inches where the bricks join on to my existing brickwork. It looks a mess for a start but I wondered if this will affect the structure stability or if it would make damp more likely. What are the consequences of filling gaps with mortar instead of half bricks as I would of expected them to do

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi. Mortar gaps in pointing should be around the 5mm - 10 mm max really 4 inches is much to big even if is to fill a gap. I would be looking to take photos and ask at a local builders merchants see what they think to it if I were you.
