old kitchen waste pipe looping in and out of wall

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.57 PM

Refurbishing kitchen. The kitchen sink is against an external wall. Very old (lead I think) sink waste pipe, after the trap, goes straight into the wall and then comes out again directly below. So it loops in and out. What is the reason for this? The builder said he is going to cut it out and install a plastic straight waste pipe. Is there a vent pipe connected to it inside the wall or something? The flat is on the first floor of a 5 storey block, and was built in the 50's.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?
