Removing paint on victorian sandstone - soda blasting?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.57 PM

Hi, hoping someone can help. Victorian property needs cleaned to remove layers of paint. Here are my questions: Has anyone experienced soda blasting? Is this a good option? How does it compare in cost terms? Does it do any harm to the stone? Does it need sealed in any way afterwards? All advice greatly appreciated. We just want to ensure that we look after and maintain the building in a sensitive way that is affordable! Fi

Good morning, Firstly, my sincere apologies for not having responded to your query before now. This is an area that we have some experience and indeed recent work resulted in an article in the local newspaper, The Ayrshire Post. The ease of removal can be a factor of the sandstone finish - smooth, nosed, textured et al. Some paints do not respond well to strippers becoming very tacky and again other paints can be very brittle and come come away clean back to the stonework with a pinch hammer or a needle-gun. In direct answer to your questions we do not have experience of "soda-blasting". Whether it will damage the stone is very dependent on how "hard" the sandstone is. Definitely do not seal the stone after the stripping of the paint ... this will prevent the stone from breathing. I hope this is of help and if it is truly belated then forgive the intrusion. Kindest regards Doug
