Holes around corners of bay window, causing cracks and crumbling plaster

Hello, We need some advice. We have recently moved into a 1950's house. As we have started to take away the wallpaper in the upstairs bedroom, we have found 1 hole on each side of the bay window, on the corner of each cill. This has caused that section of wall on each side to have cracks in the plaster going all the way down the wall. The wall behind the plaster has totally crumbled away leaving these holes. These holes are not massive but are about 4 inches wide, however on one of them there is a pin head size hole of light shining through from outside, but there are no signs of damp. We think when the double glazing bay window has been put it, it has been done badly causing this damage as the wallpaper was papered over it! Can anyone offer any advice? can we fix this ourselves by taking back all the lose plaster, filling it with expandable foam and then re plastering it or should we have someone come and look at it.

I think what you are talking about is that the horns have not been rendered properly, usually the window fitters will render or make good the horns where the window meets the cill, if you have cracks appering below the window(first floor) it may just be settlement, you can use "bat straps" to tie in the bay,first find out if you still have a ten year garentee on the windows, even if the company that fitted them have gone out of business the insurance company will not have.

I have seen this befor where the Cill was replaced was to small have someone brick up holes depending on outer surface render or repoint. plaster inside
