Bubbles in hardwood porch stain

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

Hi, I have a double door fully glazed hardwood porch built c 1997. It's in good condition save that the stain on the double doors gets bubbles in it. It's like the doors have got acne. I've had the doors rubbed down and restained a few times over the last few years but after about 3 months the bubbles reappear. It's only on the doors. Nowhere else. The last stain was Sikkens. There is no rot. Great porch. Just the bubbles. I'm new to this site and i can't see any provision to post photos. The staining has been done by a professional, who saw the bubbles first and is now not answering calls since I text him photos that it's bubbled again. Anyone interest in the job I'm in Walsall (WS5).

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, it sounds like you have leaking knots. You may be able to contain them with a liberal application of knotting but they must be very heavy with resin if you are still experiencing probs. It will stop at some point once the knot 'runs out of resin' and dries up. Try the knotting though. Hope this helps

scrape one of the bubbles off and feel if its sticky underneath .if it is, thats the sap from the knots and yes knotting is one answer, another may be to drill out the knots and fill with a suitable wood stopper followed by varnishing.
