Kitchen Fitting

Help - More expensive kitchen used by fitter than originally quoted

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.14 PM

My kitchen fitter was adding 5 extra base cupboards + worktop + 2 end panels and splashback to our kitchen which he had already re-modeled. He said there was 1 days work and fitted us in between other jobs. He still had a door key from 2 months before and we said he could store the materials in our house if it would make life easier on the day he fitted them. He didn't do this, he collected the cupboards in the morning and let himself in to the house, fitted the cupboards (with his helper). He had to cut the backs off the cupboard as this was just a shallow little in-fill area. When i returned from work around 4pm the 5 base cupboards + worktop + most of the splashback were fitted, he left shortly after as his helper had to collect his girlfriend. He arranged to come back the following friday to finish a couple of bits, he was going on a 5 day holiday the next day altho there was some small bits to complete, which he would arrange after his 5 day holiday. 10 days later he phoned to say the kitchen cupboards he had used were actually the more expensive version - the prices he provided to us had been for the budget cupboards, but howdens had given him the thicker more expensive cupboards/end panels adding around £300 to the bill. We hadn't noticed any difference in fact the cupboards look identical except for the end panels - the 18mm ones do look thicker but we only realised when this was pointed out. He wants us to pay the difference which actually works out to 65% more for the cupboards. This seems unreasonable as we were happy with the budget cupboards and were not even aware of any difference until it was pointed out. I think the problem was between him and Howdens - he didn't notice they had supplied the wrong thing and surely he has the responsibility to check he is getting and fitting the right materials??? I am happy to pay the original price - he has done a lovely job - but i was initially hesitant to go ahead with the work as the best part of £2,000 seems a lot for 5 budget base cupboards + worktop + 2 end panels + splashback. The approx £300 extra is actually £340 and if I had been given this price initially i definitely would not have gone ahead as £2300 would just have been too much for the tiny space these cupboards have provided us with, plus i don't have the extra £340! Please help.

I have to say tradesmen like this give decent tradesmen a bad name, i agree the price is well inflated i would go to Howdens and ask for a quote. I suspect this has been inflated greatly the other thing is if a price is given then you stick to it. The only time prices increase is if the customer add extras, personally tell him to take a hike. And how dare he enter your property without your consent and did you know he was bringing someone else in to your home, Cheeky bxxxxxx. Gary

I would refuse, it's not what was quoted for so why should you pay for his mistake. That's down to him and the supplier to sort out, P.s £2000 was steep in the first place, 1200-1500 tops. Calum @ CMT Contractor
