Tiling

Used wrong adhesive on UFH

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

Hello, I seem to have made an error. I fitted electric UFH in my living room (24 sq meter) and some 60cm x 30cm tiles. I layed a screed on the UFH that is suitable for underfloor heating, about 5mm thick then I tiled it with unibond rapid set tile adhesive. It doesn't appear to be a flexible adhesive although it is suitable for floor use. The tiles seem ok and it has been down for about 5 days now. I have turned the heating on for an hour or 2 to see if it works and it does. No tiles loose yet. I haven't grouted yet and I have BAL flexible grout for this. I have fitted the tiles properly with plenty of adhesive and not dot and dab. What are your opinions? Will it all go wrong? Has anyone done the same thing? Thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

Hi there. I am afraid that there is a good chance of a failure at some point. As the floor warms up and cools down, there is a natural element of expansion and contraction in the floor. Without the flexibility in the adhesive, the movement will disperse to the weakest points in the floor (the grout joint). You may see some signs of cracking in the joints. It will just be a waiting game, I have my fingers crossed for you.

As above ,but just one other thing if the tiles were porcelain then there is a chance it could also fail as you never used a polymer(flexible)adhesive,as a standard rapid adhesive is not suitable for porcelain.
