Can a cooker hood be vented through a boundary wall?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.14 PM
Just moved into a mid terrace cottage and plan to renovate the kitchen. Can the cooker hood be vented out through the boundary wall as there is a yard on the other side, or are there restrictions as with boilers? I'd rather not have to duct it over the top of the cabinets to the back wall. Been told different thing by different people, some saying you only need neighbours permission, some saying it can't be done at all. A definitive answer would be great.
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I would say no if its gas. The duct not only extracts fumes but also carbon monoxide. Best people to ask are the manufacturers of the cooker hood and/or the cooker. You may even be able to download an installation manual online which may possibly show you the distances needed. Failing that you could ring up Gas Safe.
Hope this helps :-)

HI,
No, on the face of what you have written you may be in breach of The Part Wall Act.
Get legal advice. It is also likely that you will be responsible for your legal/surveyor's costs in a Party Wall Dispute.
I hope this helps.
