Painting & Decorating

already painted new plaster with 2 coats emulsion, tends to wipe off with damp cloth

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

I didn't think of sealing the plaster, but it had been done for some months in a hot conservatory, so think it was dry. Painted with 2 coats of emulsion without thinning, but then noticed if I rubbed it or used a damp cloth to wipe, paint came off. It also looks slightly patchy. Can I put a thinned down sealer coat on now, or will a third coat of proper strength do the trick.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi, By the sounds of problem you have used a poor quality brand of emulsion probably a diy product This emulsion is not as good a paint as the trade paints most decorators will apply.

Hi Green Pea, if you painted the conservatory with poor quality emulsion then this will happen. You need to ensure you get emulsion with 'vinyl' in it.This gives it an edge over poorer quality stuff; however even decent quality paint will come off if you wipe it enough. I'm assuming you have used a matt emulsion. If you re-paint with a soft sheen or silk emulsion you wont get this problem (paint wiping off) Hope this helps

Were the newly plastered walls thoroughly dry before you painted? Do you know if the plasterer used any glue in his mix? Was the paint well stirred before applying? I would recommend a miss coat thinned down approx 50-50 before applying 2 good coats, however humidity and drying conditions etc can also create problems like this.

the new plaster should have been mist coated initially. Using good quality trade paint using a quality roller might help but couldnt guarantee success

The point of putting on a thinned coat (mist coat) is that the thinned paint is thin enough to penetrate the plaster and so bond to it. If you just paint undiluted straight on it will not penetrate leading to flaking. If you are having problems due to this you need to rub it down and start again.

Use a good quality paint such as Dulux Diamond Matt or Crown Easyclean for your 3rd coat these are scrubbable paints and should not wipe off easily.

New plaster should always be mist coated with a thinned down coat of emulsion, followed by a couple of full coats of a good quality trade emulsion. If you do not mist coat new plaster you could lead to problems such as flaking. As for the paint wiping off, always use a quality vinyl emulsion. For extra durability look in to using paint such as Dulux Trade Diamond Matt or similar.

As well as previous answers for small patches use a stain block then touch up or repaint as necessary
