Raised Beds against house wall but above existing dampcourse

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.14 PM

What sort of material (if any) should I put between the house dampcourse and the earth to ensure that the dampcourse is not hampered. Other beds are against breeze blocks so not too much of a problem. I will of course ensure that the earth in all cases runs away from the back of the beds. Regards. Wendy Reeves

Not knowing the age of your building and what the construction is & location i myself would not do a raised bed like this for a customer because if you have a slight blockage in your cavity though this might not cause a problem under normal circumstances. By coming up above damp coarse level which means the outside skin does not have any real chance of staying dry so that could create dampness to creep across the blockage.

Hi Wendy you could build a sealed box with a liner and drainage. This would keep the soil and water off the walls so would not affect damp course. Also if built from the right materials, either sleepers or brick could come up to a height to make a nice seating area.
