Renovating Bathroom - Order of work?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.14 PM

Hey Guys, We want to renovate our bathroom but we're not sure the order in which we should do the work. The room is 2m44 x 2m07 x 2m47 in case that helps at all. The original bathroom was split between a bath and basin in one room and a toilet in another with a wall splitting them. The previous owner put a toilet in the bathroom and turned the old toilet space into a shower cubicle but left the original wall there and moved the door back to enclose everything. He also put a wall up over the small window of the old toilet room and tiled the whole lot with an elevated shower tray and a shower door. This area now leaks somewhat. He did not brick up the old window but simply covered it over and tiled there. The shower is electric and the power is awful but the wall the shower is on backs onto the upstairs cupboard which contains the combi boiler. We would like to remove the electric shower and install a new shower powered by gas directly off the boiler. We would also like to knock the old separating wall, knock the false wall and brick up the original window - then plaster I suppose; remove all the tiling in the room; tile the floor and walls with new tiles; put in a ceramic shower base (tiled?) and install a shower cubicle where the old shower was. And install a new shower - gas powered. We would probably also change the basin and add fitted cupboards underneath. And we would like to remove a small radiator and change it to a heated towel rail radiator. The bath and toilet would remain as they are. In what order should we do all of these things so that we don't end up having to ask traders back to do little jobs? Oh, and we may have to change the bathroom window because it is making a hive like buzzing sound when it is windy. And we are planning to rewire the whole house so that should be factored in too. It sounds like a lot but we'll probably need a builder for the wall and window, a plumber for the shower and basin and possibly moving to gas from the electric shower, an electrician for removal of the electric shower plus the rewire, a tiler for the tiling, possibly a window fitter. Who should we get first? Thanks for your help. Shane

Use an experienced bathroom fitter and all will be sorted out by him. A good fitter will have seen and handled any problems you can throw at him.

Agree with above, a good bathroom fitting company will handle all and save you the headache of trying to source the different skill sets needed yourself. List the job on mybuilder with as much detail as possible, photos always help. Get at least 3 quotes and ask them to break the quote down into the separate stages needed, eg reinstate full room with window, remove tiles and make good all walls, remove leccy shower and fit mixer etc etc. You can then make an informed decision on who to use.
