What to do first paint or carpentry?

Anonymous user 1 June 2015 - 3.39 PM

Hi, I am soon going to post a job but wanted a bit of advice first. I am slowly doing up my flat and have had it plastered and I have mist coated throughout. I have engineered wood flooring to go down and the architraves and skirtings to go in plus oak veneered doors to hang Question is shall I get the walls and ceilings painted 1st and then flooring etc or is it best to do painting after flooring etc has been done? OK another one what time scale am I looking at to get 2 medium bedrooms a box room hallway and medium lounge decorated? would be 2 coats dulux on walls and ceilings and eggshell on architraves and skirtings plus rubbing down if needed. Many thanks for any advice offered.

I will answer the first part of you question. It is usually best to mistcoat first and then get the skiting and architraves on and then carry out the painting. This because any finished walls often get damaged when this wood work is installed and it would then be necessary to return to the walls to undertake touch ups. Touch ups are more often than not unsightly. Also if the wood work has any gaps between it and the walls they can be filled before painting. Filling these gaps after the walls are painted would mean touch ups. And any decent decorator can protect the floor properly so that not a drop of paint gets on it.

Hello, We always prefer to paint first before laying the flooring and then finally the skirting (using the skirting to conceal movement joints if it is a floating floor). The main reason for this is to avoid any accidental damage, scrapes or spills to the flooring. With regards to the decorating time-scale, I would recommend at least 1 full coat of undercoat, preferably 2, before adding colour coats; for the areas you mention I would expect 3-5 days depending on the paint and the drying time. If the skirting is to be fixed in place after the walls are painted, I would expect another few days. Good luck with your future project! Rob Wilson

I'd get the carpentry work done first as there will be plenty of holes/gaps etc to fill and if you paint first you'll end up paying for the same work twice.a good decorator will make sure the floor is properly protected prior to painting.preferably with a plastic backed cotton dust sheet to prevent tread through

I would always say Decorate first to a degree, any decent trade person will do there best to cause minimal damaged to walls etc when fitting flooring, skirting and doors :)
