Should a self-levelling compound be laid before laying Amtico flooring?

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.14 PM

We have recently had a kitchen extension and hence the floor joins (all concrete base) are at slightly different levels. We have paid (at quite considerable expense) to have Amtico flooring fitted. I had assumed our flooring company would have used a self-levelling compound but instead they applied a layer of latex and then laid the floor directly without any additional levelling. This has left dips across quite a large area that extend beyond 5mm when laying a 2m straight rule. These were not apparent in the original kitchen which had vinyl tiles. I have complained but they are insisting this is the normal thing to do. Is this right? And could the new latex have been laid incorrectly and made the floor worse?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

a screed should be used prior to fitting any amtico or LVT (luxury vinyl tile) flooring. a suitable primer (depending on sub floor) should also be used. you risk voiding the warranty of the flooring by not installing on a dust free, flat smooth surface. any good floor layer will be able to screed out a 5mm dip in your sub floor. also see if your builder has a moister tester to see if any moister in sub floor. if there is then you should really be looking at having a DPM(damp proof membrane) installed aswell. hope this has helped phil

It's not the normal thing to do. 1st the low areas shown be filled in to get floor level. Then the following day a full coat of Screeding compound. All depends on the cost really. They should of checked this when doing the measure.

amtico flooring is made of vinyl construction therefor it is important the floor is totally flat and smooth using latex is fine as long as the floor is flat but if the floor is different levels ,uneven and bumpy then it needs self levelling compound 1st I have recently laid amtico click flooring myself so i did a little research before laying it. Amtico recommend the floor to be perfectly flat and smooth.

i think when you say latex you may mean the pressure sensitve adhesive used to glue down the flooring. all lvts need a falt smooth subfloor so the procedure is to on a wood floor to plane down any high spots then ply over using sp101 ply, prime then either feather or use a full flexy latex screed. or on crete floor check moisture level in concrete, prime, screed and dpm where needed.
