level of patio with air bricks
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.13 PM
I'm having a patio replaced, but the builder seems to be laying my new patio level or slightly above the air bricks. Surely this may cause damp in my house over time? Please advise, thank you Thank you all for your time to answer. Much appreciated

All paving should be laid at least 150mm below DPC and if possible sloping away from the house at 1 in 40 depending on the paving used.
Paving should never be laid covering an air brick.
In some older building air bricks can be found lower than normal. In these cases where it is not possible to lower the paving the air bricks should have surrounds built around them to ensure water can not enter.
Air bricks are there so air can circulate under the house where wooden floors are present, By blocking the air brick you are preventing the air circulation which will lead to a build up of damp rotting the timbers.

It could cause damp especially if you have heavy driving rain it may run in the vent holes. ideally the level of the slab should be below these bricks. I hope this helps
