Question category:

Tiling

Tiling floor half timber other half screed.

Anonymous user 17 May 2015 - 1.41 PM

Working on a kitchen. 12m square in tiling for the floor. Half the floor is 18mm external ply screwed down onto joyces and other half on screed. What would you recommend? Definitely using flexible tile adhesive. Would you use Ditra mating on the whole floor (screed and timber) or something else. In the past I have used no more ply but never come across where half the floor is timber and screed. Thanks for any advise.

Firstly ensure the wood is within level tolerance to the screed if not i advise a flexible filler in the joint then latex upto the wood to ensure an even floor if extra attention is required this to be finished with featherfinish then a flexable tile adhesive :)

Totally agree with Julian Sidney ,once again his advice is spot on,in this situation I always go with a movement joint profile from Schluter between the hard and timber floor. The Ditra on its own will not remedy this.

Only safe and correct option is to use an uncoupling membrane over the whole area, but at the wood to screed joint you will need an expansion joint which must go though the tile, adhesive and uncoupling membrane to substrate. Make sure the wooden floor is screwed down and deflection free . If not deflection free us hardie board or something similar, over the whole area and again put in an expansion joint. You may well get painters and decorators, plumbers, chippies or multi trades telling you to us a adhesive suitable for wood and just tile it, DON'T. Touchstone Tiling you really need to read the Schluter website with regards to the correct use of Ditra uncoupling membrane and bridging substrates and the use of expansion joints.

Hello i would use Ditra Matting over the complete area and making sure you bridge gap with matting and go with a flexi adhesive for putting matting and tiles down.
