Grass growing on top of membrane covered earth.

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.31 PM

I had a job done last April 2014 where grass was removed from my back garden, a membrane laid over the cleared soil and shingle put over the membrane to finish off. About three months later grass (and I mean grass with roots in earth!) started growing profusely on top of the membrane and I tried to counteract this using a weed killer recommended by a local garden center. This worked to a degree but even so after about a further month it all started again and I now have grass over a large area 2/3 feet high. I'm frightened to strim it because shingle could fly into my back windows. Other gardens close to me have had similar jobs done and they're shingle is perfectly clear and I can't understand why I've had such a bad experience. I'm thinking of having the job redone which is a bit drastic (and I could even end up with the same problem!) so I'm wondering if I can I do anything else to permanently rid myself of this grass blight as it's a real eye sore.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

two key issues for the failing are normally that the weed suppressant that has been used was a low quality and there for is not up to the job. The second would be that if the shingle has not been laid deep enough then the sunlight can get through and the roots that should have been removed start to regenerate. It should always be dig out, lay sand, lay landscape fabric and then lay minimum of 2" of shingle. Over time any gravel area will start to show weeds and grass as dust (unless maintained), and dirt over time will accumulate and seeds will drop onto the gravel. My recommendation would be to have it take out and put in correctly, as weed killer will only delay the inevitable.

I would just suggest you spray weed killer on the grass that you want rid off but please be aware if you have pets or young children it can be harm full to them. round up is a good weed killer that you can just spray directly onto the grass it will go brown and die and keep you clear for up to 3 mouths. hope this helps. rich.
