Plastering & Rendering

Smooth scratch render

Anonymous user 14/03/2024 - 2.36 PM

Hi plasterers & roughcasters. Now I'm one myself but I'm new to this game with the scratch coat render.. Where you use the metal float an rub it down. Ive done a couple jobs my myself but i just can't seem to get the mix right or is just ment to be hard to work with.. I fallow the instructions with the amount of water an not over mixing but it just seems to be a bloody c#*t to work with compAried to sand an cement roughcasting. I've watch the boys on YouTube with the machines that put it on the wall but there's seem to be a better mix.. I'm using a standard mixer.. So was thinking.. Do you add something in the water to make it batter to work with? Any tips would be good thanks

Each manufactured product is different also lets say its K Rend they make several types in the same colour so ensure its the correct product How are you mixing it, I have a Belle paddle mixer that doesnt add heat to the product, are you using the correct sequence !. sbr slurry for shiney brick 2. backing coat 1st pass 3. add render scrim 4. backing coat 2nd pass, work wet on wet 5. when dry add topcoat perhaps 2 passes at 3mm past beads 6. get this on as quick as possible a continuous supply of topcoat should be available to you at all times 7. as drying time cream cheeese consistency, use a refina aluminium levelling bar to get levels go across and upwards so no indents 8. leave around 10 hours then check by putting thumb nail into scratch 9. use scratching tool to remove top peripheral layer to expose rough texture 10. if working on full facade be careful where you connect when you come down from top lift, sometimes this connection will ghost, it should have been overlapped here so if ghosting, STOP scratching and hit this area with scratcher rather than scratch back it will produce a better connection if in doubt contact technical at the product manufacturers or contact me

try a squirt of washing up liquid in the mix, believe me it makes the mix that much more plyable and easier to work with.
