Can VAT be added on after job complete?

if the price is quoted with no mention of VAT, then when you receive the final bill, and it includes VAT, the tradesman can not include VAT. If this was to happen (misleading omission). If the tradesman is VAT registered it should be declared on the quote whether the price is including or excluding VAT. Also you need to check they are VAT registered because if they are they are not meant to charge you VAT. I think the best place to find that out though is to ring HMRC, they have hotlines for finding VAT if i remember.

A tradesman should always make it clear if a quote includes or excludes VAT and with domestic jobs it would normally be included as that's what you would need to pay. The invoice should be for the agreed amount unless extra work has been added along the way. Is there a VAT registration number on his invoice? If he is registered then he must show it, if he doesn't show it he can't charge you VAT.

Then no vat on the invoice is the tradesman' problem. If no vat is on the quote ( I assume you got a written one?) then highlight this to him/her. Then take it from there.

I would ask the tradesman for his VAT number to confirm that he is on the VAT register
