Tiling

damp floor concrete due to leak. can I tile on it?

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

I had a water leak for a few weeks in am empty property. The floor was well and truly soaked. Concrete. This was over a week ago. There is no water left on the surface. Can I have the floor tiled or should I wait for it to dry. If so how long and how do I know its dry enough (the surface doesn't look too wet anymore) ??.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi there, it all depends on how bad the leak was you may need to rent a industrial fan from a tool hire shop and leave it running for 24/48hrs to dry out the room.

Yes you can tile a damp floor, use Ditra mating ( you will be looking at a cost of £20 to £25 per m2 supplied and fixed ) then tile. If you can wait it would be cheaper. Buy yourself a moisture meter, should dry out quickly if the concrete was fully cured.

Turn the heating up and dry it out for a week. you don't want to trap the moisture in the concrete by tiling onto it as screed usually has a plastic underlay which will add to trapping the moisture. The worst thing is mould, If moisture is trapped for a period mould will occur in and around the concrete and your never get rid of that damp smell. Hope this was helpful, good luck!
