Bricklaying & Repointing

Air Brick installed properly? Or just a hole in my wall...

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.13 PM

Hello, I've been having damp problems for years in which my housing association doesn't seem to want to do anything about (which includes broken guttering which they refuse to even acknowledge), but recently they have decided to install an air brick in the room in which is affected. The problem I have here is that when they installed it today, they just seemed to have drilled a big hole in my wall up in the corner where the damp forms and covered it on both ends, the outer side with an open vent cover and the inside being a slidable plastic cover which he says I can close, but wouldn't make a difference if I did. I can see clear light through it as if it is just a big hole. If anyone could shed some light on if it's supposed to seem this way or not, then it would be reassuring to know if they've botched yet another job in order to avoid doing real work, or if it's all ok for the first time in almost 20 years. Thanks.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Sounds like a botch job mate, the air brick will help dry out the plaster and give some ventilation but not solve the issue. Water s coming in from somewhere usually the roof or guttering ,bricks are porous but you probably have a cavity so they're more likely not the cause. If you are on the top floor near the roof then there's your answer but if have a Victorian or earlier era property then the bricks will soak up water and transfer it inside eventually as there's no cavity hope this helps hugh

Anyone who posts an answer regarding this is speculating,,,of course the added ventilation will help, i hope it cures this for you, however damp and moisture problems are difficult to find let alone eradicate, the prior mans answer of water from above being the most likely cause is accurate...To say it's a botch job mate, is speculative at best.
