Chimney & Fireplace

Does it matter if I lay flooring before working out fireplace surrounds?

Hi - I am refurbishing a first floor Victorian terrace. There is an open fire place which has no surround at the moment - just a square hole going into the chimney. I eventually want to install a good quality surround. I am also replacing the flooring in the same room. Do I have to wait to intall the fireplace before doing the flooring, or is it possible to install the hearth afterwards on top of the flooring? Also, somebody told me that a limestone surround might be too heavy if the fireplace is on the first floor of the property - is that correct? Many thanks Joe

The fireplace should already have some sort of floating concrete constructional hearth there so I would say lay the new flooring up to the old concrete hearth ready for the new surround and super imposed hearth. If it's purely decorative then the hearth can overlay the new floor. Any surround should be securely fixed to the wall so the weight shouldn't present a problem with it being on a first floor. Hope this helps.
