Gas supply capped off but not at street end - dangerous?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

Hi there, About a year ago I applied to my energy provider - EDF - to have my gas meter removed and capped off because I don't use gas in my flat (electric heating and water, etc) and didn't want to pay the standing charge. As far as I'm aware the EDF guy who came out just capped off the pipe in my meter cupboard, and didn't do anything at street level where I presume the other end of the pipe is. So I guess my gas supply is still live as it's not been capped off or disconnected at street level. My question is, is that dangerous? Because even though my gas supply is capped off in the meter cupboard surely there is still gas in the pipe because it's not capped off at street level? Having said that, the EDF engineer didn't tell me I needed to do anything else or contact anyone else, otherwise I would have. I'm just scared that it might be dangerous and worrying probably unnecessarily about explosions whilst I sleep, etc. would be great if someone could reassure me! Or alternatively confirm it is dangerous and I need to get out Southern Gas Network to disconnect at street level. Thanks!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

It is perfectly safe to cap off at the meter, if there is no smell of gas please dont worry, if you are worried please call national gas and they will put your mind at rest.

The procedure carried out is normal and as you have stated you are 'worrying probably unnecessarily' Please have some faith in your gas provider!
