Method to find out if a chimney breast is correctly supported

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.57 PM

Hi, I'm in the process of buying a house but the survey has highlighted that a chimney breast has been partially removed (removed only from the ground floor, still in on the 1st floor and roof). It can't be seen from outside if the chimney was correctly supported or not, so I want to get an structural engineer to have a look. I've spoken with one and he says they have a machine that can detect if there an steel beam without needing to open up the floor. I wanted a second opinion on this, would this method be enough to ensure structural safety?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello if it was my home I would consider lifting the floor boards above to inspect the steel as the Machine will not tell you the size of the steel it's condition or if it is installed correctly as if this was a DIY job you never know what you may find. However it is unlikely that it is not supported at all as you would have had problems with movement of the remaining masonry thank you.
