Had waste pipes changed and now bad smell, please advise!

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.52 PM

I have recently had work carried out to the exterior rear of my property which included changing the waste pipes. They have fitted the new pipes differently to how they were eg whereas our sink waste was going straight to a drain, it is now going into the toilet waste pipe. Since they changed it I have noticed a bad smell in the bathroom and I have been told that it is probably because they haven't put in a u-bend with water in to stop the smell coming up. I mentioned this to the company and they said it is because we haven't got a waste trap in the bathroom (we have one of those modern chrome traps). We didn't have the smell before they changed it so are they correct that we should have one inside? Or it is because they put the waste direct into the toilet waste pipe? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Kind regards,

You will need to have your waste pipes pressure tested as you have a leak somewhere in the pipework that is letting the soil pipe gasses out, you may not get the smell on certain days as to the air pressure but it will normally smell bad at night, if that is the case check all the seals including the toilet and check the traps on the sink, bath and shower are full, if it a euro shower check it has a trap fitted. Trap is the u bend.

The "U" bend or a bottle trap, are a mean of water seal from the sewage. Sometime this amount of water, into the trap can be, "vacuum" into the stack breaking the water seal. My feeling is that the new arrangement is not installed with the right gradient, or the new connection to the toilet waste pipe is not sealed properly. Drain pipe test, as mentioned in a previous post, could be required. I hope that's help Tiziano
