Question about fibreglass roof finish (bubbles)

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.30 PM

Hiya I have just had a large fibreglass roof done. I notice on the edges of the roof there are what look like small pin pricks (looks like they were air bubbles or something which popped A photo can be seen here: http://s8.postimg.org/8h673mlth/image.jpg My question is: - Is there anything to worry about or is this normal - Is it likly to be watertight - Will it last as long as it would if these pinholes aren't there - Is there anything which the builders can do to resolve this? Many thanks

I would advise that you have this checked annually. what you can see could be resin starvation this allows water to penetrate between the fibres in the chop strand matt (reinforcement) In some cases it can cause osmoses. When osmoses occurs water will penetrate the fibres that have been starved of resin. Eventually this will blow the roof and allow the substate to rot underneath the fibreglass roof and could lead to expensive repairs. All this will be multiplied in winter by freezing the water inside the stands. Hope this helps

Hi Andrew What you are seeing is where the consolidation process and resin absorption has not quite occurred correctly in the mat - known as resin starvation. It does not normally allow water ingress and the roof should be fine. I have many roofs whereby we consolidate correctly and use the correct amount of resin but still get a few pinholes. You can lightly abrade the roof, clean with acetone and re-finish the top-coat layer. Looking at your image the topcoat appears okay, I would not expect to see raised bits, it looks like the roof was not sanded before the topcoat was applied - but looks okay for a general builders work..... I assume you have a written guarantee for the works? Regards Andrew @ Fibretechs - Gloucestershire

Evening, Nothing to worry about there, the topcoat has been spread a little thin that's all. Yes it will still be water tight, to resolve ask the builder to nip back and mix up a little more top coat and go over the small section, won't take more than 2 minutes! Calum @ CMT Contractor
