Cost of Tile Cutter Hire

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.56 PM

Recently started a bathroom job and we are putting in marble tiles in bath. Builder has now asked that he needs specialist tile cutter as tiles are marble and normal cutter wont be good for it. The cost of it would be £240 to hire for 6 days. He didn't use it for one of the days and only used it for total 5 days. Question I want to know is who should really be paying for this hire? Also he said two of his tile cutter drills have gone blunt as he drilled holes in our tiles and wants me to replace them at a cost of £35 and £18. Should I be liable to replace them as I didn't even know what condition they were in prior to start of the job?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Without doubt he should be supplying the cutter and the drill bits. You as the customer should not pay for tool hire. Why employ a builder to do, what is a specialist job , Marble fitting. This is a job for an experienced tiler. Hopefully he is not fixing onto plaster or plasterboard, it must be a backaboard such as a cement board to hold the weight. If you have a shower area it needs to be waterproofed as Natural Stone will let water vapor though. Make sure he has used the correct adhesive and colour, has a solid bed of adhesive, he buttered the back of the stone or you can end up seeing the adhesive through a light coloured Marble or even worse they could end up coming off. Make sure, if he has got the preparation right, that the Marble is cleaned, allowed to DRY then sealed correctly. If it a darker Marble, make sure the correct silicon is use or you will end up bleaching the stone. These are some of the pitfalls of Marble fixing, does your BUILDER know any of these? I do hope he has done a good job for you and you have ended up with your dream room. Julian

You shouldn't pay for the hire or replacing the drill bits, these should have already been included in the quote and an oversight on his part. Calum @ CMT Contractor

the hire of the tile cutter and drill bits should be in on the price of the job and not extras .

If the builder was aware that you were having marble tiles he should have included the cost of the cutter in his quote, likewise and drills that he would need replacing
