Painting & Decorating

knots in the wood & yellowing of the said paint work

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.12 PM

I've just moved house & the paint work needs to be redone it's white gloss in which I want to keep but the previous owners have used an oil based paint so it's really yellow & there are knots showing through it looks like they have used a wood filler or similar product on the knots as it's not so much the knots that are showing through but the product that's been used to conseal them, the only really good thing is there is absolutely no paint runs or any other imperfections on the paint work other than the yellowing & the knots. Normally with the paint work being so good I would just have washed it down with sugar soap then painted it with a water based gloss paint but I don't want to do this & the yellowing & the knots show through especially if it's a few weeks or mounths down the line. Can you please advise me the best & quickest way in which to go about achieving the best possible job I can with the best product or products for the above work as I don't have the time or the inclination to experiment with products or procedures as there's so much to do HELP. I will be eternally greatful for any advise that you can give me. Thanks (in advance) Yours Elizabeth (Auntie Biff)

Because your woodwork is already painted rub down woodwork to provide a key spot paint your knots with 2 coats of zinseer BIN its shellac based smells strong but blocks knots coming back through, as for a not yellowing gloss dulux trade quick dry undercoat and quick dry gloss are probably the best water based gloss I have used along with johnstones Aqua undercoat and gloss.

Hi there Auntie Biff, the reason for the wood work turning yellow is not so much an oil based paint being applied more because of a water based paint and more immportantly the wood work has not been knotted prior to painting. Give your wood work a good rub down and were your brown marks are coming threw/knots are is to put knotting on, let it dry and then undercoat/gloss or 2 coats of satinwood on.
